The Canadian Grand Prix Champion : Richard Figiel

2016/09/06 - 0:04 by Jôle Simard

The Canadian Grand Prix was an unbelievable event, one to remember. Players had merged from both online and live starting flights, and came together in yesterday’s Day 2. From 3341 entries, 481 showed up for Day 2. Of that number, 46 played today in the third and final day of this marathon event.

Richard Figiel will most likely remember this performance his entire life, as it is so far his greatest tournament achievement. He single-handedly eliminated the last 5 players, to earn himself the 1st place, the Champion’s Trophy, and a very cool $49,385 cash amount, $10,000 of which was earned by besting his ICM chop opponents.

Heads-up play was quite short. After about 10 minutes, Richard limped in from the button, to see Paul Mohorea raise to 4.6M, which he called. The flop came 9 of Hearts 10 of Diamonds 9 of Diamonds. Paul check-called a 2M bet, which brought us to the turn. Queen of Clubs. Paul checked again, to hear Richard go all-in. He went to the tank for a short time, and then decided to call with Queen of Hearts 10 of Hearts, a nice two pair. Richard turned over the nicer 9 of Spades 7 of Spades. When the 4 of Diamonds fell, the tournament was over.

Congratulations Richard!

Three eliminations happened rather quickly after the ICM chop was proposed and accepted, for this is now a winner-take-all event.

Richard Figiel and Karla Leduc were in an all-in hand together. Richard had Ace of Clubs Queen of Diamonds, and Karla was holding the King of Diamonds King of Hearts. The board came 10 of Hearts Jack of Clubs 6 of Diamonds 8 of Diamonds 9 of Spades, giving Figiel a straight! Karla takes 6th place.

Next, Richard eliminated Kegan Cummings, when his Ace of Clubs King of Spades hit an Ace on the board, taking care of Kegan’s King of Hearts King of Clubs. He took 5th place.

Shortly after, Richard Figiel was dealt yet another great hand, as his Ace of Hearts King of Spades took care of Neil Macleod’s Ace of Clubs 10 of Clubs, after the board came with no help for Neil.

Richard Moreau took 3rd place, after his Queen of Clubs 6 of Clubs flush draw on the 3 of Clubs Jack of Hearts 4 of Clubs did not come through. Figiel’s Ace of Diamonds 7 of Hearts held up, and Moreau was out.

Richard Figiel orchestrated all 4 bust-outs since the chop was made! He is now taking on Paul Mohorea in a heads-up match for $10000! Good luck both!

After some deliberation, the final 6 players in the Canadian Grand Prix have come to an agreement. They’ve agreed to the ICM numbers proposed, with a slight modification: a total of $10K has been removed from the payouts and added as a bonus for the eventual tournament champion, who will also take home the WCC Champion’s Trophy.

Given a deal was accepted, the “Golden Chip” promotion from partypoker.net is no longer valid.

Below are the prizes that players have locked in, with an additional $10,000 going to the eventual winner.

Congratulations!

Play has been 6-handed for 2 full levels now, and the stacks have become fairly shallow in the mean time – with the average player holding a little over 15 big blinds. The final 6 eventually asked to pause the clock to see if a deal can be negotiated, as the pay-jumps are becoming very big and a lot of money is on the line. We will return with an update shortly. Below are the stacks of the players as they negotiate:

Richard Moreau, who had been inactive for a while, finally picked up a spot to send his chips in the middle. He shoved 8.9M – which is just 9 big blinds now – with Ace of Spades 6 of Diamonds from the under the gun position. Paul Mohorea opted to isolate him with 9 of Diamonds 9 of Clubs. The board came: 5 of Clubs 3 of Clubs 6 of Spades Ace of Diamonds 4 of Hearts. The turn was crushing for Paul, as it brought him back to average instead of sky-rocketing his stack far ahead, and eliminating a player in the process.

The players are now discussing the possibility of a deal…

Stay tuned!

Karla Leduc doubles up

Karla Leduc just doubled up at the expense of Richard Fiegiel. Richard had raised to 3.2M with Ace of Spades 10 of Spades, and was forced to call Karla’s 6.6M all-in bet. She tabled Jack of Spades Jack of Hearts, and together they went to the board. The dealer revealed 5 of Clubs 10 of Hearts 6 of Diamonds 9 of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds, and Richard sent over his invested chips.

Karla is the last woman in the tournament, and also a golden chip owner, which would grant her an incredible $50000 in the case of a win!

Our 6 finalists are moving on. Here are the updated rough counts:

Update: as this post was being written, the other golden chip owner, Neil Macleod also doubled up! The table below was updated accordingly.

Daniel Dagenais was crippled by Karla Leduc moments ago, as his Jack of Hearts Jack of Clubs fell short to Karlas’ Ace of Hearts King of Hearts for a pot north of 8 million chips. With less than 1 bb behind, he was eliminated on the very next hand in the big blind.

7th place: Daniel Dagenais – $10,300.00
