Our NL Hold’em Shootout Champion: Douglas Paulson

2016/09/12 - 3:44 by Jôle Simard

After quite a ride on the final table, Douglas Paulson was crowned Champion of Event 25. One could say that it was fitting to see him win, since he was the first finalist to really put his stack to work, taking the lead early, and staying in the top 3 most of the time.

In the end, he was playing heads-up against Chad Coombs, who came back from the crypt where he was hiding and observing bust-outs. The blinds were very heavy, since all-ins had been favoring the shortest stack so unbelievably often, so players rarely played flops. Instead, they saw whole boards.

The last hand of play saw Chad limp in 60K from the small blind, and Douglas go all-in with Queen of Hearts 10 of Hearts. Chad called quickly with the Ace of Clubs Jack of Spades. They went to the board, and both were standing, as the winner of this pot was going to take it all, more or less. The dealer turned over 2 of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds 9 of Clubs 6 of Clubs 7 of Spades.

Douglas had spiked a Ten, and by doing so, he added $200 to his previously acquired $1,800. Chad took $1,800.

Congratulations to both!

Event 25 in the World Cup of Cards was a $100 + $10 NL Hold’em Shootout tournament. The tournament mandated a hard cap of 100 players and this cap was reached, contributing to a total prize pool of $9,700.00 which was distributed as follows.

David Vallée went out in third place. Even though he had the biggest stack at the moment of the deal, he only needed to lose 2 hands to walk away with a cool $2,000. On the last one, he had Ace of Hearts King of Hearts, and lost to 6 of Spades 6 of Diamonds, after the 5 of Clubs 8 of Spades Queen of Clubs Jack of Hearts 4 of Clubs board could not help his big slick.

Great job!

Our 3 shootout finalists just re-arranged the prize pool, as the blinds are now incredibly big. David Vallée secured $2,000, and Chad and Douglas both secured $1,800. They are now playing for $200 up top, but also for the handsome Champion’s Trophy. Will ”9-lives” Chad get it? Possible, because he just doubled up!

Stay tuned!

4th place: David Cadoche

David Cadoche went all-in under-the-gun with King of Clubs 10 of Hearts, having only 2.5 big blinds. It was met by Chad Coombs’ Ace of Hearts Jack of Spades. They both stood as the dealer revealed the board: Queen of Clubs 8 of Clubs 7 of Spades Jack of Clubs 2 of Hearts. David walked away with a smile, as he was now able to go sleep a few hours. He will do it $1,100 richer!

Congratulations!

As the tournament director removes the 1K chips, players take a moment to reflect on Chad Coombs unlimited lives. He has now been surfing on a stack varying from 1 to 5 big blinds for many orbits, folding until he was basically forced to table his cards. The most notable hand was when he was all-in for less with 6 of Spades 3 of Spades against King of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds on a Queen of Hearts Jack of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds. Sure enough, the tail of the board came King of Spades 9 of Hearts!

Here are the counts of the final 4:

5th place: Mark Howie

  • Level: 24
  • Small Blind: 15K
  • Big Blind: 30K
  • Ante: 3K
  • Chip Average: 375K
  • Remaining: 4
  • Entries: 100

2016/09/12 - 2:17 by Jôle Simard

The blinds are now huge at 15K/30K/a3K, and Mark found King of Clubs 6 of Clubs in the small blind, in an unopened pot. David Vallée looked at his cards and immediately called, having Ace of Clubs King of Spades. No help for Mark with the 8 of Clubs 8 of Diamonds 2 of Diamonds 4 of Diamonds 9 of Diamonds. Mark made his way out, as David complimented him on his play. Mark is awarded $820 for his 5th place.

Well done!

Salvador had doubled up a few short stacks, so he was now a little short himself. He open-shoved with 10 of Clubs 10 of Hearts, but David Vallée had a surprise for him. He called from the small blind with Queen of Clubs Queen of Diamonds, and the King of Spades 6 of Spades 6 of Hearts 5 of Hearts Ace of Spades was no help for Salvador. He was taken out in 6th place, and pockets a nice $630 pay for his efforts.

Congratulations!
