Event 27 in the World Cup of Cards was a $100 + $10 NL Hold’em Freeze that attracted 85 players who started the tournament, adding up to a prize pool of $8,245.00. This was distributed according to the following payout table.

There were two prize pool deals in the tournament. First, the players chose to take $100 from the first prize and award it to the player in 10th position. Second, with 4 left the players decided to flatten the prize pool, leaving $695 and the Champion’s Trophy for the winner and locking up $1,300 each. These deals are reflected in the payout list below.

Heads up in Event 27

2016/09/14 - 19:28 by

Ghislain Pigeon has been eliminated in 3rd place ($1,300) and the tournament is now heads up between Jamal Stewart McKenzie and Borislav Angelov. This doesn’t figure to be a long heads up match – the play since the deal was reached has been extremely loose.

3rd place: Ghislain Pigeon, $1,300

There has been a 4-way deal in Event 27. Very simply, the players chose to re-distribute the prize pool such that 1st place would receive $1,995 and the trophy and the other 3 finishers would each receive $1,300.

Very soon after the deal was made Glen Hammers was eliminated in 4th place – and since then, there have been a flurry of all in hands as the chips fly around between the remaining 3 players.

Play in Event 27 has moved incredibly quickly since the final table began and after just 30 minutes of play, there have been 6 eliminations – and the remaining 4 players are now discussing a deal.

There was one hand of note in particular. Dave Jeanneau-Cyr (who has already won 4 events in the WCC) open shoved from early position and Borislav Angelov went all in himself for a just 4K more in chips. This sent Matt Ranger deep into the tank… but eventually he made the call and the cards were flipped over.

Dave: Jack of Clubs 3 of Clubs
Borislav: Ace of Clubs 7 of Spades
Matt: Ace of Hearts Queen of Diamonds

Matt looked to have the best of it and held on the flop of 2 of Clubs 9 of Spades 8 of Hearts, but then the 7 of Diamonds on the turn vaulted Borislav into the lead, which he would not relinquish on the river 6 of Hearts.

Borislav effectively tripled up, Dave was out and Matt was left with just 7K behind – 2K of which were owed for the next ante.

Eliminations

  1. Amir Majidi – $720
  2. Matt Ranger – $550
  3. Dave Jeanneau-Cyr – $420
  4. Pierre-Luc Audet – $320
  5. Karam Saleh – $240
  6. Carrie Webster – $100

Matt Ranger (with his new chips)
Matt Ranger (with his new chips)

On table 38, Matt Ranger has just taken a huge pot that could have implications for the rest of the tournament. Matt bump raised from utg and Charles La Boissonniere called from the utg+1 seat to Matt’s left. David Alfonso Martinez shoved over the top for 12K and the action folded back to Matt. And then things got fun.

Matt went all-in to isolate with just one player to act behind… but almost before he could finish saying, “all in,” Charles, who covered both players, made the call and flipped over Ace of Diamonds King of Clubs. Matt laughed at his misfortune and turned over a weaker suited ace: Ace of Spades 8 of Spades. David, for his part, turned over the Jack of Clubs 10 of Spades.

Matt beseeched the dealer to put an 8 on the flop – but the flop was a thing of strange poker beauty: King of Spades 5 of Diamonds Jack of Spades – something for everyone! The two players who had made their pairs weren’t happy to see the 3 of Spades – and, holding the ace, it was no problem for Matt that the 9 of Spades appeared on the river.

Matt doubled up and then some (over 115K total) while David hit the rail and Charles was left with nothing but a very small stack to continue with – which ironically was itself defeated by another spades flush just minutes later.
