Event 28 Champion: Benoit Laurence

2016/09/15 - 6:39 by Jôle Simard

After a short heads-up match, Benoit came out victorious, and is now a very happy trophy owner! Of course, he also cashes his $4,120 ICM share and the extra $1001 awarded to the winner of the final table.

As previously mentioned, they started off pretty even. Soon, Benoit had Marcello down to about a million, until he doubled up and got back to even. Benoit sighed, but did not despair, having his eye of the trophy sitting on the table. Then came the final hand. Marcello raised his button to 500K with King of Spades 10 of Clubs, and then Benoit shoved all-in with Ace of Hearts Queen of Diamonds. Benoit had made a few moves earlier, so Marcello decided his equity was good enough to call. The dealer put out the cards: 4 of Spades 7 of Spades 3 of Diamonds Jack of Clubs 4 of Hearts. No help for Marcello. They both shook hands, a little worn out from this very long tournament, but happy they made it this far.

Congratulations to both finalists!

The Quantum Champion: Jiachen Gong!

2016/09/15 - 3:41 by Jôle Simard

e1-2695After a heads-up match that lasted about an hour and a half, the Quantum came to an end, and it is with great pleasure that we crown Jiachen Gong! The last 2 men standing traded chips and words, playing for a $17,000 difference in the best of moods. That light atmosphere was due in great part to Armand King’s entertaining behaviour, that kept Jiachen, the staff and the crowd smiling. His great spirits will be remembered. Here are some of the things he said while playing a fierce game:

  • “It must be a terrible thing to play for a multi-million-dollar first prize. Just that is quite hard on the ticker!”
  • “A lot of people my age are in nursing homes wearing oversized pampers, and I’m here with you.”
  • “This thing is worst than working!”

He also took a napkin in the midst of a good-sized pot to wipe the Champion’s Trophy that was sitting between the 2 finalists! He sure put on a great show, and a also a great fight!

Jiachen brought himself up to a 2/1 chip lead, then Armand got back even. And Jiachen did it again, slowly grinding, and showing great patience. He didn’t want to take any unnecessary risks, until the blinds got to 250K/500K/a75K. Armand limped from the button, and Jiachen shoved with 7 of Clubs 7 of Hearts. Armand had 5,925,000 out of the 18,500,000 before the hand, so he decided that wasn’t going to let this 500K go away, and placed the call with Ace of Spades 9 of Clubs.

The board came 8 of Spades Queen of Diamonds Queen of Clubs 2 of Diamonds 5 of Hearts, and Jiachen had dodged Armand’s outs.

Congratulations to both players!

Day 2 of the Quantum is now behind us, and the 1,023 entry field is now down to just 22 players. They have bagged their chips and will return tomorrow at 7pm for Day 3, where the plan is to play down to our Quantum Champion. 41 players secured themselves a payday today, and the lucky winner is set to take home a cool $50,000 cash prize along with the WCC Champion’s Trophy.

Players will return to their same seats to start Day 3, and a full redraw will take place once they reach 18 players, and once again when they reach the final table of 10.

The chip leader is Marc-Olivier Carpentier-Perreault, who is back from a successful trip at the EPT in Barcelona. Noeung Troeung bagged the second biggest stack, added a few extra chips to close the night as he eliminated Danny Freitas on the last hand of play. The full list of player-reported chip counts is found below.

Brady Hinnegan wins the CPPT World Cup of Cards

2016/09/13 - 21:22 by

The new level was only about 10 minutes old when the final hand was upon the players, though the hand started innocently enough. Tomas had lost a few more chips than he had on the last break and was starting to be quite short-stacked when he limped and Brady checked behind to see a flop.

Flop: Queen of Clubs King of Diamonds 9 of Clubs

It was an action flop, but the action went check-check and the dealer laid out the turn 6 of Clubs. Brady bet 200K and Tomas made the call. The river was an action card for Tomas – the 5 of Spades. Brady opened to 300K and Tomas chose to go all in – only to meet with a snap call from Brady, who instantly flipped over his Jack of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds for the flopped straight. Tomas was disappointed that his rivered 2nd pair – he held Queen of Spades 5 of Clubs – was no good but he took it like the pro he is and congratulated Brady on the victory.

With the elimination of Elie A, heads up play between the two final players surviving in the tournament has begun. The players still in contention for the massive $110,000 first prize are Tomas Larivee Magni and Brady Hinnegan. Second place will make $78,000, so it not exactly going to be a hardship to come in 2nd – but both players are also playing for pride and the trophy, both of which sweeten the pot considerably!

Blind levels have been reduced to 30 minutes in length.
