Jonathan Cohen Crowned Champion of Event 18

2017/08/30 - 19:25 by Playground Poker

Event 18 in the World Cup of Cards was a $100 + $10 Mixed Event, where players were alternating between rounds of Pot Limit Hold’em and Pot Limit Omaha. A total of 52 entries took place, with 6 places paid and a top prize of $1,820.

The final table was formed when 9 players remained, and before long 3 of them were eliminated to bring the event into the money. We then saw Alexandre Carpentier and Niko Ghag hit the rail fairly quickly before a long 4-way battle. Salim Harji wound up the 4th place finisher, and after another level or so Jonathan Marrie was sent packing in 3rd place, leaving way for a heads-up battle between Matthew Wilkins and Jonathan Cohen.

Jonathan began with the slight chip-advantage although the race was very tight to begin with, and within a few minutes a pot was formed with nearly all of the chips in play. Matthew opened to 40,000 from the small blind, and called Jonathan’s 3bet to 110,000. With 7 of Diamonds King of Spades 4 of Spades showing, action was pot / re-potted until no more chips were left to wager, and hands were tabled.

Matthew had a pair and a flush draw with Jack of Spades 10 of Spades 7 of Clubs 3 of Clubs and was virtually flipping with his opponent, who was open-ended with a pair and a smaller flush draw with 5 of Hearts 6 of Spades 7 of Hearts 9 of Spades. Jonathan turned a straight as the dealer rung out a 3 of Hearts, and held for the win on the 4 of Clubs river to scoop the pot. Once the count was done, Matthew was covered by a hair and eliminated from the tournament, while Jonathan was crowned champion of Event 18, collecting the top prize and a WCC Champion’s Trophy.

Congratulations!

Event 18 Winner: Jonathan Cohen – $1,820.00

Event 18 runner-up: Matthew Wilkins – $1,224.00

Jonathan Cohen raised the pot from the small blind, and Jonathan Marrie re-potted from the big blind to 108,000. On a 2 of Clubs 3 of Clubs 4 of Clubs flop, Cohen bet enough to put his opponent all in, and Marrie open-folded his King of Hearts Queen of Hearts, forfeiting nearly half of his stack.

One orbit later, Cohen limped in from the small blind and called Marrie’s pot-sized bet of 36,000. On a King of Hearts 9 of Clubs 8 of Diamonds board, Cohen check-shoved after Marrie bet most of his stack.

Cohen: Jack of Hearts 9 of Diamonds
Marrie: Ace of Spades Queen of Spades

Cohen had the lead with a pair of Nines, and held on to it as the board ran out with a 8 of Spades and a 7 of Clubs.

3rd place: Jonathan Marrie – $820.00

Harji eliminated in 4th

In the last hand of a PL Omaha round, Salim Harji limped in from the small blind, Jonathan Cohen raised pot to 30,000, and Salim obliged. With 4 of Spades Jack of Spades 3 of Hearts showing, Salim bet the maximum of 60,000, leaving him with 5,000 behind, and Jonathan moved all-in.

Salim: Queen of Diamonds 9 of Clubs 6 of Clubs 5 of Spades
Jonathan: Queen of Hearts Jack of Clubs 10 of Diamonds 4 of Diamonds

Salim needed to catch a straight or make some kind of runner-runner to survive, but the 6 of Spades turn and Jack of Hearts river brought him no help and he was forced out of the tournament in 4th place, good for $560.

Players are now on a short break, with the following stack sizes:
