Andrew Watt, champion of the Big Ante Event!

2017/08/22 - 20:44 by Playground Poker

Event 5 of the World Cup of Cards attracted 87 runners culminating in a $8,439 prize pool which was split into 9 payouts. The one-day event took place on August 22nd, and when all was said and done it was Andrew Watt who was left with all the chips in play.

Andrew was average stack when the final table began, and he remained fairly quiet in the early stages. He watched a few players hit the rail before changing gears, and when play was 4-handed he found a huge double-up with 8 of Hearts 8 of Diamonds over Peter Johnson’s King of Hearts 10 of Hearts to jump up the leaderboard. Once 3-handed action began Andrew propelled himself into the chip-lead by eliminating Daniel Le with Ace of Clubs King of Hearts over Ace of Diamonds 3 of Clubs, and headed into heads-up play with a 2-to-1 chip lead over Sasan Mehrabian.

After only a few hands of heads-up play an all-in / call occurred, with Andrew holding Queen of Clubs Jack of Clubs and Sasan at risk with Ace of Clubs 10 of Hearts. Sasan was poised for a double-up until a river card came and changed it all, as the board read 10 of Diamonds 3 of Spades 2 of Spades 6 of Clubs Jack of Hearts. Andrew had won the hand and the tournament, taking home a prize of $2,165 as well as a WCC Champion’s Trophy.

Andrew was second overall in the WCC Leaderboard to start the day, but his win in Event 5 should put him in the lead, or at least neck-to-neck with current leader William Blais. Standings can be found via this link.

Congratulations!

Event 5 Champion: Andrew Watt – $2,165.00

Runner-up: Sasan Mehrabian – $1,651.00

Daniel Le and Andrew Watt just played the biggest pot of the tournament as they faced off in a pot north of 1.1 million chips. Daniel Le was holding Ace of Diamonds 3 of Clubs and was trailing the Ace of Clubs King of Hearts of his opponent, and with no improvement on the 6 of Clubs 5 of Hearts 5 of Spades 9 of Hearts King of Diamonds board he was forced out of the tournament in 3rd place.

3rd place: Daniel Le – $1,256.00

Peter Johnson lost the better part of his stack after calling off Andrew Watt’s open-shove, where his King of Hearts 10 of Hearts was bested by 8 of Diamonds 8 of Hearts on a Queen of Hearts 9 of Diamonds 5 of Spades 8 of Spades 6 of Diamonds board. He was forced to pay out 291,000 in the hand, leaving him with almost nothing behind, and was eliminated shortly after, booking 4th place in this Big Ante tournament.

4th place: Peter Johnson – $955.00
