The Strangers in the Night champion is …

2019/02/01 - 1:41 by Playground Poker

[Note: two players were mis-identified at the table, so wrong name was used to identify the champion of this event. We apologize for the error.]

After outlasting all 583 opponents, Jamie Baker was crowned the champion of the $150 + $25 Strangers in the Night event. Congratulations to him on a very nice night of poker!

It was an extremely rapid Day 3 from the get go, seeing six of the twenty starting players eliminated in mere minutes. It took only two hours to reach the final table of ten players, and that’s when the real poker began.

Although a few players were knocked out in the first hour, things slowed down considerably with six players remaining. After about 90 minutes of play there seemed to be no end in sight, when out of the blue a streak of players were eliminated in rapid succession by Terence, former short stack at the table.

In the heads-up battle between Jamie and Terence the lead moved back and forth for a short time, but ultimately Jamie wore his opponent down, slowly stacking an insurmountable chip lead.

The final hand played out with Terence as the aggressor. When the flop was dealt 7 of Diamonds 8 of Spades 5 of Clubs he led out with a 225,000 bet, called by Jamie. After the 8 of Clubs came down on the turn, Terence turned up the heat with a 650,000 bet. Again, Jamie called. The 9 of Clubs on the river led to Terence shoving all in for his remaining chips, but it was a losing effort, as Jamie had flopped a straight with his 4 of Hearts 6 of Clubs.

Terence’s 7 of Spades 9 of Hearts two pair were not enough.

Congratulations go out to both players, Jamie for his 1st place win of $14,135, and Terence for his 2nd place finish, grabbing $13,417. Excellent job!

After only a few minutes facing off against one another, both players decided to ask for the numbers on an ICM chop. In the end, they agreed that Terence would receive $13,417 and Jamie $12,535.

$1,600 was put aside for the eventual winner. Play continues!

It’s Baker vs. Caulcutt on the final table

2019/02/01 - 0:50 by Playground Poker

Seen here getting a massage, Terence Caulcutt faces off against Jamie Baker. The two now go mano-a-mano, dueling it out for the trophy and the big prize up top. Good luck to both players!

After more than an hour without much changing on the table, it all started changing quickly.

One of the (many, many) preflop shoves finally resulted in the elimination of one of the final five. Whereas usually the shove would garner folds around the table, this time it hit. The gentleman that took the brunt of it was Grant Ellis, who got his 1,080,000 chip in with pocket 7s.

Grant was called by Terence Caulcutt, who was holding Ace of Hearts 3 of Hearts.

The board was dealt 4 of Hearts 5 of Hearts 8 of Spades, a good start for Terence who was searching for the flush. The next card was a Queen of Hearts (completing the flush) and the final Ace of Diamonds was unnecessary.

Grant said goodbye, took the 5th place $3,980

The very next hand we saw another elimination. This time it was Vsevolod who left. He shoved preflop with Jacks, getting called by Terence’s J-Q. The board was dealt 9 of Spades Ace of Hearts Queen of Diamonds 6 of Spades 4 of Diamonds and that was it.

Vsevolod took 4th place and $5,180.

Incredibly, the next hand saw Terence eliminate another opponent. This time the victim was Sebastien Fortier.

This run of luck was even more impressive because only a few hands before Terence was the short stack. But by doubling up (almost) each hand, his stack progressively grew large enough to take on larger opponents each time. In this case, it was Terence holding the pocket jacks. He faced off against Sebastien’s Ace of Clubs 8 of Hearts.

The board was dealt 4 of Spades 10 of Diamonds 8 of Clubs Queen of Clubs King of Spades, and that was the end of Sebastien’s night!

He earns a 3rd place finish and a healthy prize of $7,280.

Congratulations to all three players for outlast hundreds of opponents and taking home some substantial cash. Well done!

The last four hands have all involved all-in-shoves. The extreme short stack at the table started things off with two un-called shoves. Collecting the blinds on both hands almost doubled Alexandre Cote-St-Louis up!

Next it was Jamie Baker who shoved on the button. Terence Caulcutt took his time thinking about it, and eventually trusted his gut to make the call. It was a good read.

Terence: Ace of Clubs 9 of Clubs
Jamie: King of Spades 4 of Diamonds

However, the board was dealt 8 of Spades 8 of Diamonds 4 of Spades 10 of Hearts King of Clubs, and Jamie doubled up at Terence’s expense. It was a good read – just bad luck. It didn’t end Terence’s night, but it did set him back 875,000, cutting his stack in half.

The next hand it was Alexandre who shoved preflop again, this his third time in four hands. However, this time he didn’t collect the blinds, just 6th place and $3,270. His 10 of Diamonds 10 of Clubs faced off in a losing battle against Grant Ellis’ Ace of Hearts Queen of Clubs, with the board giving Grant two pair, Aces and Queens, and the rest of Alex’s chips.

We say goodbye to Alexandre, and now only five players remain!

Baker doubles up, then doubles again!

Now in level 30, the blinds are getting higher and higher, currently at 100,000. The shorter stacks are starting to feel the pressure. Perhaps hoping to capitalize on this dynamic, Sebastien Fortier called Jamie Baker’s preflop shove, hoping his pocket pair would take down Grant’s cards. Sebastien flipped over sailboats, a 4 of Hearts 4 of Diamonds. Jamie, however, had 9 of Spades 9 of Diamonds.

Jamie made a set on the flop and eventually took down Fortier in the hand, doubling up above 1,000,000 at his expense on a 2 of Clubs 9 of Hearts King of Diamonds 7 of Diamonds 2 of Spades board.

Not one hand later, it was Antonio De La Cruz who shoved. This time it was Jamie’s turn to call.

Antonio’s Queen of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds faced off against Jamie’s suited Ace of Spades 8 of Spades. Jamie ended up flopping the nut flush, eliminating Antonio, who only managed two pair on a 7 of Spades 10 of Spades 6 of Spades 5 of Hearts Ace of Hearts board. Jamie’s stack has almost quadrupled in two hands, making this a whole new ballgame for him. Well done!

And congratulations to Antonio as well, finishing in 7th for $2,700.

Louis Collette just bet his tournament life on a pocket pair. He was called by Antonio De La Cruz, who was thinking the exact same thing. Louis had shoved for about 700,000, so when the players flipped over their cards it was Louis that stood up, as he was covered by Antonio’s larger stack.

Antonio: 9 of Hearts 9 of Clubs

Louis: 3 of Spades 3 of Diamonds

Board: Ace of Spades 10 of Diamonds Queen of Hearts 4 of Clubs Jack of Clubs

Louis finishes in 8th place and earns a prize of $2,150. Congratulations! Now only seven remain.

Wilkins out in 9th

Matthew Wilkins had tried three different chairs during this final table. Nothing quite felt right. That same sense of unease followed him out of the tournament, as he never did end up finding his groove on the final table. Sometimes that happens. In this case, it led to a 9th place finish and a prize of $1,620.

Matthew shoved preflop with pocket 7s, coming up against Sebastien Fortier’s pocket Kings. A King landed on the flop making Sebastien’s set, and Matthew took his leave. Well done, better luck next time.
