Patrick Sarry is the Seniors’ event champion

2019/01/31 - 20:22 by Playground Poker

There’s an old poker adage that all you need is a chip and a chair to win a poker tournament. Well, Patrick Sarry is a living example of just how true that phrase actually is.

Early in the tournament, Patrick was down to his final 2,000 chips, and it looked like he was on the verge of busting. But patience, perseverance, and little lady luck helped guide Patrick to victory at the WCC Event #16, the $150 + $15 Seniors’ event.

Heads up between Patrick and Michel St-Francois didn’t begin until Jared Newcombe busted from the event. Jared had raised all in, preflop, and Michel called.

Jared was holding Queen of Hearts 10 of Clubs, and Michel’s hole cards were Jack of Hearts Ace of Spades.

When the community cards came down 5 of Spades 3 of Spades 3 of Clubs 5 of Hearts 2 of Hearts, Jared’s night was over.

That left Michel and Patrick facing off in a heads up battle.

Their duel lasted less than 30 minutes, and was ultimately decided when both players went all in.

Patrick bet everything on Queen of Diamonds 9 of Hearts, and Michel bet the barn on 7 of Spades King of Clubs. But when the dealer dealt the community cards Ace of Diamonds 4 of Clubs 6 of Hearts 2 of Diamonds Queen of Hearts, the board delivered Patrick the victory with the Queen on the river.

As runner up Michel takes home $2,486.

Patrick’s share of the prize pool was $3,941, plus the champion’s trophy, and tournament bragging rights.

Congratulations Patrick for a memorable comeback!

When Kenneth Klein raised to 60,000 (all in), preflop, Francis Collins, one seat to his left called.

Kenneth was holding Jack of Spades 6 of Spades, and Francis’ hole cards were King of Diamonds 9 of Diamonds.

The community cards were dealt: 4 of Spades 5 of Clubs King of Clubs 2 of Clubs 8 of Hearts.

Francis won the hand with his pair of Kings, and that reduced the table to six players.

Following the elimination of Kenneth, the players cut a deal regarding the payout. The negotiations resulted in a deal that looks like this:

The big stack at the table, Patrick Sarry will receive $3,500. The remaining players – Alain Blais, Timothy Deering, Michel St-Francois, Francis Collins, and Jared Newcombe – will all receive $2,486.

The six remaining players will continue to battle it out for a pot of $451, the tournament trophy, and bragging rights.

While this post was being written, Timothy Deering busted. So now we’re down to five!

We’re down to the final table in Event #16 of the World Cup of Cards – the Seniors’ Event. After more than seven hours of play, the field has been reduced to its final 10 players.

When Paul Bertrand raised all in, preflop, Patrick Sarry called.

Paul’s hole cards were Ace-Jack, and Patrick showed Ace-Eight.

Lady luck has been siding with Patrick all afternoon long, and it was no different on this hand. When the dealer dealt the community cards – 10 of Diamonds 9 of Diamonds Jack of Spades 7 of Hearts 3 of Clubs – Patrick added to his already enormous stack by winning the hand with a straight.

Paul posted an 11th place finish.

With 21 players remaining in the WCC Seniors’ Event #16, the players agree to take $100 from both the first and second place prize to provide $200 to the 21st place finisher. That consolation wound up belonging to Lucy Corbain. She went all in with Ace of Spades 10 of Hearts, but busted out when the player to her immediately left beat her with pocket kings, King of Diamonds King of Clubs.

Now we’re down to the final two tables of the night!

Just before the second players’ break, Patrick Sarry was down to his final 2,000 chips, and it looked his stay in Event #16 might be a short one. But after winning a couple of monster hands, Patrick is back from the brink, and is now our chip leader.

The 30 remaining players in the event, who just returned from their third 15 minute break, are now only 10 eliminations from the bubble. During the pause in the action, we counted the chips, and determined that Patrick is more than 50,000 chips in front of his next closest competitor. Patrick’s stack of 380,000 chips is testament to his perseverance, as just a short time ago, it looked like he was on the verge of busting.

But the final table, and the a winner’s prize of more than $5,000 is not a preordained conclusion. Especially with Gary Lucci lurking not too far behind, with 326,000 chips.

While the leader board has seen a cornucopia of competitors come and go, Gary has been a stalwart. He was in 2nd place after the first break, fourth spot after the second break, and now he’s climbed back to second spot again, within striking distance of Patrick.

As it stands now, the average stack size is 147,115.

It was not long ago that Patrick Sarry was on the verge of busting out.  Now, after winning a huge pot, he looks like he might be the tournament’s chip leader.

After Bonnie Baker limped into the hand, preflop; Patrick, Ivan Driard, and Stephen Baker called before Barbara Phillips raised all in. Bonnie and Stephen both mucked, but Patrick, and Ivan also pushed their stacks towards the dealer.

When the players revealed their hands, Barbara was holding Ace of Hearts Jack of Clubs.

Patrick’s hole cards were Queen of Hearts Jack of Clubs.

Ivan showed 9 of Diamonds 10 of Spades.

When the community cards were flipped, the dealer revealed 3 of Clubs 9 of Spades 10 of Clubs Jack of Spades King of Clubs.

Patrick hit the straight, knocking both Barbara and Ivan from the event, and winning a mega-monster pot at the same time.

The 64 remaining players at the WWC Seniors’ Event #16 have just returned from their second break. During the pause in the action, we counted the chips and discovered that a new leader has emerged at the front of the pack.

After the first players’ break, Francis Collins was our big stack, but now Bill Kontaratos has jumped into the pole position. His stack measured 166,000 chips, and he has taken a 19,000 chip lead over the competitor in the place position, Gilbert Charles, who has amassed 147,000 chips.

Gary Lucci, who was in second place after the first break, is still in the thick of it. He’s now in fourth place with 138,000 chips.

The average stack size right now is 60,714.
