That’s it for Day 1C

2019/02/03 - 23:09 by

Day 1C in the WPTDeepStacks event has now come to a close with about 56 of the 284 entries on the day still seated. There wee a few players who managed to build up commanding stacks of chips as the day wound down, but no one amassed more than Karim-Olivier Kamal, whose stack of 468K will almost certainly be the #1 stack from the entire tournament to move to Day 2.

Day 2 gets underway tomorrow (Monday February 4th) at 12:00pm and will play through all the way until a 9-handed final table is formed.

Consult the full list of Day 2 Qualifiers here.

Here are some photos of the chip leaders during the last level played tonight.

2019/02/03 - 22:15 by

The clock in Day 1C of the WPTDeepStacks event has just turned over to level 15, the last level of this 3rd of 3 starting flights in the tournament. There are currently 64 players left in the flight, and considering that this is the largest of the 3 starting flights, it’s unlikely to come down very much, meaning that there will be something like 125-130 total qualifiers for Day 2.

Justin Rabba takes the lead

2019/02/03 - 21:13 by Playground Poker

The players at the WPTDeepStacks Day 1C have just returned from their third 15 minute break. During the pause in the action the chips were counted and we determined that Justin Rabba has jumped out to the front of the pack.

Justin has a stack of 268,000 chips and has a lead of just 13,000 chips over Philippe Sousa, who clocks in with a stack of 255,000 chips.

The race at the top of the pack is a tight one, with the third place competitor, Sergio Reschetnikov, amassing a stack of 247,000.

In addtion to these counts, we can also announce that the prize pool has been announced in the event. On a total of 686 entries, the prize pool totals $998,130. Full payout details are available under the Results tab for this event.

The players in Day 1C of the WPTDeepStacks event have completed their dinner break and have resumed play in level 10 of the tournament. With the end of the dinner break came the end of the late registration and re-entry period – for today’s flight and the entire tournament. When the dust settled, there were a total of 284 entries in today’s Day 1C flight, and that adds up to a total of 686 total entries across all Day 1s.

The players at the end of Day 1C will join the 71 players that have already qualified for Day 2 via earlier Day 1s – but the players tonight still have over 5 levels to navigate before they get there…

The players are now on dinner break.

When they return at 6:30 registration will officially close, and the leader of the pack will be Angelo Gonzales with a chip count of 165,000. Oddly enough, almost none of the players in the top 10 were chip leaders at either of the last two chip counts.

This means there is a lot of chip movement, as players jockey for position in the run up to tomorrow’s Day 2 action. And that fluidity is likely to continue as players get knocked off and the stack grow ever higher.

Play tonight will end just before 11PM. Good luck to all the players still in the hunt!

As we walked the isles in this packed WPTDeepStacks Day 1C we noticed one of our former bloggers at table 27 sitting on the button, so we stopped to see some action.

Piotr Wielopolski saw the table fold to an UTG raise to 2100 by Ami Alibay, and his call made it a one on one battle. The flop was dealt 4 of Clubs Jack of Spades 6 of Diamonds and Ami checked. With the benefit of position, Piotr was able to control the action. He led out with a bet of 2,500, which was called by Ami after a pause.

The turn was an Ace of Diamonds  and again Ami checked. Unless Ami was slow-playing his hand, this was another opportunity in which Piotr’s position helped him. In this case, his raise to 6,000 was too much and Ami folded, helping Piotr slowly build his chip stack.

In the next hand Piotr found himself heads up once again, this time against Yaseen Siddiqui in the small blind. When we joined the hand the pot was about 9,000 and the board was showing 6 of Spades Jack of Spades 5 of Hearts 9 of Diamonds. In this hand it was Yaseen taking the initiative. Piotr called his bet of 2,800.

A 3 of Spades came on the river, making a flush possible. Yaseen bet again, this time for 4,200, but Piotr must have put him on something less than a flush, because he called without almost any hesitation. Yaseen flipped over his 10-J, having paired his jacks on the flop. But Piotr won this hand as well, flipping over pocket Aces. In this case it wasn’t so much Piotr’s position as his killer hand that took down the pot.

Play continues!

Note: As we were writing this post Piotr busted in a 3-way battle, losing set over set after jamming on the flop. His three 4s were better than one of his opponents’ pair of Kings, but not the other opponent’s set of 5s.

So far the top stack of the day belongs to Benoit Coulombe in the WPTDeepSTacks Day 1C. He’s got triple the chip average, and is one of only a handful of players over the 100,000 chip mark so far. Registration will remain open for another 3 hours, until 6:30PM, which is right at the end of the one hour dinner break.

At this point we have had 236 entries, including 32 re-entries. A full complement of 179 players are still at the tables, and the registration continues to rise. Get down to Playground for a day full of Habs hockey, Superbowl gluttony and poker action!

Holman’s open-ender ends her

Debra Ann Holman found herself shoving with an open-ended straight draw mid way through level 4 in the WPTDeepStacks Day 1C. She was very short stacked and felt the time was right for this kind of a move. Her 9 of Hearts 7 of Hearts ran into Stephane Blouin-Verroeulst’s pocket 8 of Spades 8 of Clubs, not a fair matchup on its face, but a hand with the potential to double her up and get back in the hunt.

Debra started her attack with late-position bet of 2,000 with the board showing 3 of Clubs 8 of Diamonds 6 of Hearts. Only Stephane wanted to play. Unfortunately for her, he had already made his set on the flop. He checked, she shoved, he called, and the rest was history.

A 7 of Diamonds and 9 of Spades came down on the turn and river, respectively, providing her two pairs and a swift exit from today’s action.
