The final table is set

2019/02/04 - 23:40 by Playground Poker

The final table in the WPTDeepStacks tournament – Event #17 in the 2019 World Cup of Cards at Playground – has been confirmed.

The players, who had been grinding it out for more than 10 hours trying to earn the right to play at the final table, advanced to their goal midway through level 27. That’s when Daniel Le knocked out Samuel Gagnon to reduce the field to nine.

When both players went all in, Daniel was holding Ace of Clubs 8 of Clubs, and Samuel’s hole cards were Ace of Diamonds 7 of Diamonds.

The first three community cards were Ace of Hearts 7 of Clubs 3 of Diamonds, and Samuel looked like he was in good shape with two pair.

When the dealer put out the turn, a 5 of Diamonds, Samuel was still in control. But when the river came down 8 of Spades, Samuel’s fate was sealed – his two pair were second best and the members of the WPTDeepStacks final table was set.

Day 3 of the WPTDeepStacks begins tomorrow at 12:00pm. At the end of the night, the tournament’s final seating redraw was performed, and when action gets underway on Day 3, the players will be seated as per the following table. Chip counts for each player are also available. Click or tap on any column header to sort the table.

Play is really tight at the WPTDeepStacks Day 2. As the final table, and the big prizes loom closer and closer, the players are being extremely cautious.

At table 24, Samuel Gagnon, from early position, raised preflop to 40,000.  Rodney Lawrence called.  When the flop came down 6 of Spades Jack of Spades 6 of Hearts, Samuel bet 30,000. Rodney called.

The dealer put out the turn 8 of Spades – both players checked.

But when the river was revealed by the dealer, 3 of Clubs, Rodney bet 100,000. This gave Samuel pause for thought. After some reflection he pushed his cards back to the dealer and Rodney took the pot.

Players in the WPTDeepStacks event have returned from their 45 minute long dinner break and play has now resumed in level 23. There are just 34 players remaining in the tournament, meaning that the min-cash for remaining players is up to $4,815, and play is set to continue all the way until 9 players remain.

We surveyed the stacks during the break and found that there are now a few players that have built up stacks of over 1M in chips – these current leaders are listed in the table below.

Here are a few pics of some of the players who remain in the hunt.

Due the the long period of hand-for-hand play, the tournament director adjusted the break schedule so that the dinner break tonight would not be put off too long – so they players took a 15 minute break following level 20 (not level 21) and will take their dinner break following level 22.

During this recent break we surveyed the remaining tables for chip leaders and found the following players all over 600K in chips.

The current leader at this point is Michael Khan, who now playing over 880K in chips.

Alexander Allison has just doubled through Karim-Olivier Kamal to bring his stack up over the 425K mark.

Michael Khan opened the action with a utg raise to 24K and found a call from Karim-Olivier in the cutoff. Alexander, on the button, raise all in for what we eventually found out to be 204K. Michael folded but Karim-Olivier made the call.

Alexander: Ace of Clubs Jack of Hearts
Karim-Olivier: 7 of Diamonds 7 of Hearts

An Ace came on the 9 of Diamonds Ace of Hearts 2 of Spades flop and neither the 8 of Spades or 4 of Spades on the turn or river could bring Karim-Olivier from behind and Alex made a bit more than a full double-up.

Table 22 is the table where the player who went out on the bubble had been seated, but in addition to the small stack that she had been playing, there are also seated two of the top 4 stacks in the tournament at this time.

Matthew Wilkins is currently playing a stack of 765,000 while Kevin Cote has over 840,000 at the moment. What’s more, they’re directly across the table from one another – so there are no blind-on-blind clashes to come between them soon – if one is in a hand and the other chooses to play as well, it’s purely by choice, not “forced” by positional dynamics.

The other leaders in this post-bubble period are Michael Khan who now has over 700K and Kevin Rivest is approaching the 700K mark as well.
