Martin Gaudreault-Rémillard is the WPTDeepStacks Champion!

2019/02/05 - 16:50 by

With the chip stacks to start heads-up play and the blind level they were playing, it was possible, even probable, that the 2-way match would end up taking a significant period of time. However, these players had something else in mind. Before the end of the first level of heads-up play, there was an all-in and a call – and a player at risk.

Julio Cacoilo opened the action preflop with a raise to 400K and Martin Gaudreault-Remillard made the call.

Flop: Jack of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds 9 of Hearts

The action went check-check – a little bit of a surprise considering the wet board. The turn was 5 of Hearts – and the action heated up quickly. Martin opened to 500,000 only to face an all-in raise from Julio. Martin went pretty deep into the tank before calling – but call he did.

Julio: Ace of Diamonds King of Clubs
Martin: Jack of Clubs 9 of Spades.

Martin was miles ahead with two pair and just one card left to come – and the river brought no solace to Julio: Martin had made a full house with the 9 of Diamonds! And just like that, the Champion was crowned!

For his efforts in the tournament, Martin receives $182,790 plus a WPTDeepStacks Championship Prize package (a $3,000 USD value), as well as the WPTDeepStacks trophy.

Congratulations!

Event #17 Champion: Martin Gaudreault-Rémillard, $182,790 (plus a $3,810 Championship Package)

Final hand of play

2nd place; Julio Caciolo, $128,210

Play is now heads up between Julio Cacoilo and Martin Gaudreault-Remillard. Julio starts with a slight chip lead – 12.6M to 8M – but both players are quite deep so there’s a strong possibility of an extended hu match – even though the history of this final table so far might not suggest so.

Ray Carter takes 3rd place

  • Level: 32
  • Small Blind: 75K
  • Big Blind: 150K
  • BB Ante: 150K

When the players returned from the break prior to level 32, Raymond Carter had the chip lead, but after a series of difficult hands, he found himself at the bottom of the chip table when the decisive hand came along.

The hand was a blind-on-blind with Julio Cacoilo opening with a raise to 575K, which was met by Ray’s shove for just over 3.5M in chips. Julio made the call and the hands were exposed.

Julio: King of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds
Ray: King of Clubs Jack of Diamonds

Domination! The community cards held no miracles for Ray: Ace of Hearts 9 of Clubs 5 of Clubs 5 of Diamonds Queen of Spades and Julio was on his way to heads up play while Ray was eliminated in 3rd place for $82,670.

3rd place: Raymond Carter, $82,670

Le hits the rail in 4th

Daniel Le arrived at the final table as the chip leader, and arguably the most experienced player in the field, but although he made some good moves and grew his stack successfully in the early going, eventually he lost a couple of hands, found his chip stack diminished and was the short stack at the table with 4 players remaining.

In Daniel’s final hand of the day, Martin Gaudreault-Remillard opened from utg to 275K. Daniel made the call from the bb and the players went to a flop.

Flop: Ace of Diamonds 10 of Clubs King of Clubs

Daniel check-called Martin’s bet of 300K and the players took the turn: 4 of Hearts.

The turn is when things went a little upside-down. Daniel checked again, but this time Martin bet… all in for just under 3M in chips. With action back on Daniel, he went deep into the tank, clearly very confused about Martin’s move. Judging by his facial expressions and movements, he had a fold worked out intellectually, but emotionally he couldn’t pull the trigger. Whether or not that is true or not – eventually Daniel tossed a single orange chip to signify his call.

Daniel was in very rough shape, and when the Queen of Clubs on the river hit Martin, Daniel graciously took his leave and went to the Tournament Desk to collect his prize ticket for $60,555.

4th place: Daniel Le, $60,555

Leo Leclerc out in fifth

  • Level: 30
  • Small Blind: 50K
  • Big Blind: 100K
  • BB Ante: 100K
  • Chip Average: 5.1M
  • Remaining: 4
  • Entries: 686

2019/02/05 - 14:51 by

The play continues at a frantic pace as the WPTDeepStacks is already down to 4 players remaining as Leo Leclerc has been eliminated in 5th place.

Julio Cacoilo – who has built up a leading stack today – opened the action with a raise to 420,000 and Leo shoved for his last 1.5M from the button. Julio made the call.

Cacoilo: 8 of Diamonds 8 of Hearts
Leclerc: 5 of Hearts 5 of Diamonds

Cacoilo’s larger pair held on the King of Hearts Jack of Diamonds 4 of Diamonds 7 of Spades 4 of Hearts board and Cacoilo stacked the chips.

5th place: Leo Leclerc, $46,285

Kamal next to hit the rail

  • Level: 29
  • Small Blind: 40K
  • Big Blind: 80K
  • BB Ante: 80K
  • Chip Average: 3.4M
  • Remaining: 5
  • Entries: 686

Karim-Olivier Kamal has had an amazing tournament. After starting Day 2 in first place by count, he disappeared from the tournament leaderboard as soon as the first counts were completed on the day, and never re-appeared until the final table list was produced… and there was Karim. Going into the action today he didn’t have a massive chip stack, but he did have the largest previous live tournament prize in his history, and that comes with a certain amount of “been there before” comfort.

Unfortunately for him, however, he was unable to get much going today. He was able to ladder up a couple of spots, but when action folded to Karim on the button, he shoved holding Ace of Spades 3 of Spades. Julio Cacoilo was in the small blind spot, and made the call holding Ace of Clubs 9 of Diamonds.

The community cards were dealt: Ace of Diamonds Queen of Spades 2 of Spades Queen of Diamonds 7 of Diamonds

The second Queen brought about a few extra chop outs, but on the 7 of Diamonds river, Julio’s 9 of Diamonds kicker was good.

Dredge out 7th

  • Level: 29
  • Small Blind: 40K
  • Big Blind: 80K
  • BB Ante: 80K
  • Chip Average: 2.9M
  • Remaining: 6
  • Entries: 686

2019/02/05 - 13:44 by

There are now just 6 players remaining in the WPTDeepStacks as Mitchell Dredge has been eliminated in 7th place.

Daniel Le opened the action with a preflop raise and Mitchell made the call to allow himself to get to the flop.

The flop came Queen of Clubs 8 of Hearts 8 of Clubs and Daniel check-called Mitchell’s all in bet of 1.1M from the button

Mitchell: King of Hearts Queen of Diamonds
Daniel: King of Diamonds King of Spades

Neither the turn 4 of Spades nor the river King of Clubs gave Mitchell any help and he was out in 7th place.

Le eliminates Phanyaseng

2019/02/05 - 13:30 by

Johnson Phanyaseng started the day 3rd in chips, but he has been eliminated in 8th position from the final table of the WPTDeepStacks. He lost a substantial portion of his starting stack just a few hands earlier when he called Karim’s 3b all in holding 5 of Spades 5 of Clubs and lost to Karim’s 10 of Hearts 10 of Clubs – he was left with just about 1M in chips.

The end of his journey in the tournament came when he got his final 956K in holding Ace of Clubs Jack of Clubs. A third player got out of the way, but Daniel Le found the call holding 7 of Spades 7 of Diamonds. Daniel’s 7s held on the Ace of Spades 10 of Hearts 9 of Spades 2 of Spades 10 of Spades board and that was the end of Johnson’s tournament.
