Event 18 in the World Cup of Cards was a $100 + $10 Mixed Event, where players were alternating between rounds of Pot Limit Hold’em and Pot Limit Omaha. A total of 52 entries took place, with 6 places paid and a top prize of $1,820.
The final table was formed when 9 players remained, and before long 3 of them were eliminated to bring the event into the money. We then saw Alexandre Carpentier and Niko Ghag hit the rail fairly quickly before a long 4-way battle. Salim Harji wound up the 4th place finisher, and after another level or so Jonathan Marrie was sent packing in 3rd place, leaving way for a heads-up battle between Matthew Wilkins and Jonathan Cohen.
Jonathan began with the slight chip-advantage although the race was very tight to begin with, and within a few minutes a pot was formed with nearly all of the chips in play. Matthew opened to 40,000 from the small blind, and called Jonathan’s 3bet to 110,000. With showing, action was pot / re-potted until no more chips were left to wager, and hands were tabled.
Matthew had a pair and a flush draw with and was virtually flipping with his opponent, who was open-ended with a pair and a smaller flush draw with . Jonathan turned a straight as the dealer rung out a , and held for the win on the river to scoop the pot. Once the count was done, Matthew was covered by a hair and eliminated from the tournament, while Jonathan was crowned champion of Event 18, collecting the top prize and a WCC Champion’s Trophy.
