Patrick Bernier wins Event #19

2019/02/03 - 21:30 by

Patrick Bernier – who at one point on the final table was down to just 55K in chips – has emerged as the winner of Event #19 in the World Cup of Cards at Playground.

The head up match against Stuart Linnen lasted about a half hour during which they kept roughly equal stacks. Eventually, though, a hand came that would signal that the end of the tournament was near (though not yet over).

Patrick got it in with King of Spades 9 of Clubs after Stuart limped his Ace of Hearts King of Diamonds to trap on the button/sb. Stuart made the call and Patrick saw the bad news – he was dominated. But although poker is primarily a game of skill, luck is involved, and Patrick would benefit in this hand. The window card on the flop was 3 of Diamonds, but the other two cards: King of Clubs and Queen of Clubs seemed to signal what was to come.

Turn: 5 of Clubs
River: 6 of Clubs

Patrick had made his flush! When the stacks were counted down, Stuart had just 60K in chips remaining.

He was all in the very next hand holding 10 of Diamonds 9 of Spades compared with Patrick’s Queen of Clubs 7 of Spades – the so-called “computer hand”.

Flop: Jack of Clubs 6 of Spades Jack of Clubs
Turn: 7 of Diamonds
River: 3 of Hearts

Patrick’s two pair Jacks and Sevens took the pot, and the win!

Event #19 Champion: Patrick Bernier, $1,660

Final hand of the tournament

2nd Place: Stuart Linnen, $1,835

Fady Abazah raised to 85K from the sb but then faced an all in bet from Stuart Linnen. Fady went half-way in the tank, but before the wait got too long he resignedly made the call.

Fady: Queen of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds
Stuart: Ace of Hearts 7 of Clubs

Fady’s hand was pretty strong considering the circumstances, but he would still need to hit. The flop 6 of Spades 3 of Clubs 8 of Hearts didn’t have what he needed, and the 7 of Hearts on the turn only served to help Stuart. Finally the 3 of Diamonds river was another blank and Fady left the tournament with his 3rd place payout ticket in hand.

3rd place: Fady Abazah, $1,685

Heads up in the $110 Freezeout

2019/02/03 - 20:30 by

With Fady’s elimination there are now just two players left in today’s Event #19, the $110 Freezeout. Patrick Bernier and Stuart Linnen start heads up play with roughly even stacks, and even with the deal having been completed with 4 players remaining, it’s clear that both Patrick and Stuart want to win the title and the trophy that goes along with it – in addition the the $220 more that the champion will take home.

Dubois-Daigle gets “rivered” again

Steven Dubois-Daigle arrived at the final table with a dominant chip lead, and all the way down to 4 players remaining has maintained a healthy lead… but no more. He has been beaten on the river when in the lead twice already, and this hand came along when he had just over 300K left in his stack.

Steven was on the button and raised to 65K, and when Fady Abazah in the sb raised all in, he instantly called.

Steven: Ace of Hearts King of Clubs
Fady: Ace of Diamonds 2 of Diamonds

The flop was fine for Steven: 6 of Diamonds 4 of Hearts Ace of Spades and then the King of Diamonds on the turn gave him two pairs, while Fady had only one draw left to make a flush… and then the dealer flashed Queen of Diamonds on the turn and Fady did in fact make his runner-runner flush.

The very next hand saw Steven make his exit from the tournament.

4th place: Steven Dubois-Daigle, $2,014

The 4 remaining players in Event #19 took their regularly scheduled break, but considering that there had already been two impromptu breaks, they cut it short. In the time they were away, however, we managed to get current counts.

Steve Dubois-Daigle continues to lead by a wide margin, despite recently allowing Patrick Berner to double up…

ICM Chop in Event #19

  • Small Blind: 15K
  • Big Blind: 30K
  • BB Ante: 15K
  • Chip Average: 560K
  • Remaining: 4
  • Entries: 112

The remaining 4 players received the numbers provided on a straight ICM chop very favourably, and have chosen to reserve $220 and the Champion’s trophy for the winner while locking in the following payouts irrespective of finishing position.

Patrick Bernier: $1,440
Fady Abazah: $1,685
Steven Dubois-Daigle: $2,014
Stuart Linnen: $1,835

Once the deal was agreed to, play continued for a few minutes and then the regularly-scheduled break arrived.

Robitaille is the next to go

  • Level: 19
  • Small Blind: 10K
  • Big Blind: 20K
  • BB Ante: 10K
  • Chip Average: 560K
  • Remaining: 4

2019/02/03 - 19:28 by

Play continues at a quick clip in Event #19 and a player has just been eliminated in 5th place, leaving just 4 players remaining.

Stuart Linnen opened the action with a raise to 50K from the button, and Jean-Guy Robitaille in the bb went all in for 93K. Stuart made the call.

Stuart: Ace of Clubs Jack of Hearts
Jean-Guy: Ace of Diamonds 3 of Spades

Stuart’s Ace-Jack high prevailed on the board of 5 of Diamonds 7 of Clubs 7 of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds 9 of Spades and Jean-Guy exited in 5th place.

Immediately after his elimination, the remaining group asked for help with the numbers on an ICM chop, so the tournament has been paused for a few minutes.

Simard out 6th

  • Level: 19
  • Small Blind: 10K
  • Big Blind: 20K
  • BB Ante: 10K
  • Chip Average: 448K
  • Remaining: 5
  • Entries: 112

2019/02/03 - 19:18 by

Steven Dubois-Daigle continues to enjoy the large chip lead he has had for some time now, and with short-stacked Maurice Simard directly on his left, he chose to raise preflop to 33K, clearly communicating to Maurice that if he wanted to play, it would be for his entire stack. Maurice went all in for 42K. The other players got out of the way and Steven quickly called.

Maurice: Ace of Spades 3 of Clubs
Steven: Jack of Clubs 10 of Hearts

Maurice’s Ace looked good to start on the 4 of Hearts 4 of Diamonds Queen of Hearts flop, but when the Jack of Hearts came on the turn, he became a huge underdog in the hand and the 6 of Clubs couldn’t save him on the river.

6th place: Maurice Simard
