26 players advance to day 2

2019/02/04 - 23:51 by Playground Poker

The end of Event #21: Day 1A $1,000 = $100 CPPT is in the books. Of the original 139 entries, 26 players have advanced to Day 2 which begins on Wednesday, February 6 at 12 noon.

This was the first of two flights. The second flight begins tomorrow at 11 am.

Below are photos of some of the players who accumulated big stacks.

Carter Swidler managed to turn the tables on Devon Morgan. Two hands in a row, Devon had re-raised Carter, preflop, forcing Carter to fold.

But three hands later, Carter jumped on the opportunity to give Devon Morgan a taster of his own medicine.  Preflop, Casey Smith raised to 5,200. Carter, Devon, and William Blais all called.

When the dealer snapped the flop onto the board, 6 of Spades 3 of Spades 8 of Hearts, Devon bet 8,500. William and Casey both mucked, but Carter raised to 23,500.

Morgan eyed his opponent, counted out the chips, but in the end, decided to fold.

Danny Freitas calls Haipeng Pang’s bluff

Danny Freitas just won a big pot after Haipeng Pang attempted to push him off the hand.

Preflop, Haipeng raised to 2,600. Danny called.

When the dealer revealed the first three community cards, 3 of Spades Ace of Hearts 2 of Hearts, Haipeng bet 3,500, and once again, Danny called.

When the 10 of Diamonds, on the turn, was snapped onto the board by the dealer, Haipeng pushed again. This time he bet 7,000. But once again, Danny called.

When the river was revealed, 10 of Clubs, Danny initiated the betting. He pushed 11,000 chips into the pot. Haipeng pondered his next move before raising to 32,000. Danny paused for thought, but eventually called Haipeng’s bluff.

Haipeng’s hole cards were King of Spades Jack of Clubs. But Danny was holding Ace of Clubs 7 of Hearts. He won the hand with a pair of aces.

Play has just resumed following the second break of the day in the Card Player Poker Tour event. Players continued to join the field throughout the break to bring the total number of entries up to 131. There are a few minutes remaining in the late registration and re-entry period so we still may see a few more players get in to Day 1A before it’s too late.

Several players built up big stacks during the last few levels, but one player, Justin Beers, has outpaced them all to lead the field with a stack of more than triple the current chip average.

The turn saves Smith

Now that we have entered the eighth level of play, we are starting to see a widening gap between the big and small stacks and all ins are becoming a more regular occurrence. A hand that showed both of these dynamics just played out on table 56.

It was a heads-up pot between Roger Lamia and Casey Smith. Lamia, the big stack at the table, had been applying pressure and playing lots of hands. Smith, the small stack at the table, had to pick his spots more carefully, and it looked like he had found the situation he had been waiting for. In the end, Smith would get the result he wanted but not the way he wanted to get it.

The board read 6 of Hearts 9 of Hearts 9 of Clubs when Lamia, the first to act, put out a bet of 4K. Smith took a moment in the tank before raising all in for roughly 20K. The raise was quickly met with a call, and Lamia flipped over Ace of Spades Ace of Clubs. Smith looked up in frustration as he rolled over his Jack of Clubs Jack of Hearts. But his frustration quickly turned to joy when the Jack of Diamonds fell on the turn. The river brought a blank in the 7 of Spades, securing Smith’s double up.

As we approach the end of the sixth level of play, the Card Player Poker Tour event is still picking up steam, with players taking advantage of the extended late registration period to get in on the action.

There have been 119 entries so far, thanks in part to the fourteen players who opted to re-enter, and some high profile players are in the field, such as Chanracy Khun and Eric Afriat.

Here is a look at the field from level 5:

As play resumes in level 5, two hours of play has elapsed, and this event has already seen 11 re-entries, bringing the field up to 108 entries and counting.

Several players took advantage of the fast action in the early levels to jump out ahead of the pack, with five players holding more than double the current chip average. But Darryl Wettlaufer leads them all with a stack over slightly more than 90K.

Late registration and re-entries for this flight will be available until 7pm.

The number of entries in the Card Player Poker Tour event continues to climb quickly, helped by a steady flow of players who hit just the rail in the WPTDeepStacks Day 2 that is running on  the opposite side of the hall.

This event gathered 8 re-entries during the first three levels of play, showing that players are taking a
“boom-or-bust” approach to the compact format this tournament provides.
