Event #4: Gauthier wins!

2019/01/22 - 4:18 by Playground Poker

After almost 9 hours of play and an ICM chop, the endurance and will to fight on at the final table was beginning to wear thin.

However, over three successive hands, Stephane Gauthier came out of nowhere and eliminated all three of his opponents, one after another.

Congratulations to Stephane for an excellent tournament!

The hand that won him 1st place is illustrated below, in which he pulled a flush on the river. Stephane defeated 2nd place finisher Christopher Turnbull. Christopher took home $2,695 and 10+ $100 bounty chips.

However, as mentioned above, this was the third hand in a row won by Stephane, each of which was an all in.

He previously defeated the 3rd place finisher Philip Schrier (who took home $2,035 + 2 $100 bounty chips) when Philip’s pocket pair of 4 of Spades 4 of Diamonds was routed by Stephane’s 10 of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds on a Jack of Spades 6 of Hearts 3 of Spades 6 of Clubs 8 of Spades board.

Stephane had also defeated the 4th place finisher Hicham Hammoud just prior to taking on Philip. Hicham ended up taking home $2,330 + his bounty chips when his King of Diamonds 6 of Spades was absolutely crushed by Stephane’s Ace of Hearts Ace of Spades on a 4 of Spades Ace of Diamonds 2 of Spades 6 of Diamonds Queen of Spades board.

Altogether the final prize breakdown shakes out like so:

1st place: Stephane Gauthier – $2,585 + bounties
2nd place: Christopher Turnbull – $2,695 + bounties
3rd place: Philip Schrier – $2, 035 + bounties
4th place: Hicham Hammoud – $2,330 + bounties

Congratulations to all on an excellent tournament.

Once there were only four players left, the table discussed an ICM chop. After a relatively quick back and forth, the group amicably came to a decision. Each player will receive approximately $2,500, along with whatever $100 bounty chips they happened to have collected throughout the day.

Everyone is happy, the pressure is off, and now the players will now likely bring this tournament to a (relatively) speedy close.

Good luck!

The hand began with with a relatively small raise of 80,000 chips by Hicham Hammoud, which was called by William Blais. Once the flop came down 10 of Spades 7 of Clubs 5 of Clubs, William shoved and was insta-called by Hicham.

Hicham: Ace of Spades 8 of Clubs

William: King of Spades 9 of Diamonds

The Turn and River 6 of Diamonds Ace of Clubs were of no help to Mr. Blais, with the river cementing Hicham’s win. William Blais finishes in 5th place and will collect a prize of $1,150.

Now 5-handed, some of the chips have started flowing around the table, and the lead is slowly changing. Just now one of the two larger stacks at the table (Stephane Gauthier) doubled up the smallest one (William Blais). This will lead to some interesting new dynamics at the table.

It was a classic battle of Ace of Clubs Queen of Hearts vs 8 of Clubs 8 of Diamonds.

The board was dealt 6 of Diamonds 5 of Diamonds 6 of Spades 9 of Diamonds 5 of Hearts, and Blais’ pair of 8’s held up.

Play continues on.

Anything can happen at the final table, but usually if you see some real chip movement or eliminations it is because one or more players began the hand with pocket pairs and shoved preflop.

Just that situation happened a minute ago, where Christopher Turnbull found himself all in preflop against a significantly smaller stack in Ellis Steinberg.

Once called, Steinberg flipped over a pair of 2’s, Turnbull a pair of 6’s.

But wouldn’t you know it, the board was dealt Jack of Hearts Jack of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds King of Clubs Queen of Spades! The players split the pot and will leave to play another hand.

The final table is here!

2019/01/22 - 2:16 by Playground Poker

With eight players remaining it only took one hand to remove our last two players before the final table.

The hand started with the short stack at the table (Patrick Leduc) shoving all in blind. He had less than two big blinds, so he had no choice. The biggest stack at the table (Stephane Gauthier) called, thinking that was it.

However, Jonathan Poissant, full of confidence from his tournament win earlier today, decided to come in over the top in a psychological power move. Although he had less than half of Stephane’s stack, it would still be a huge gamble to call.

But that’s what Stephane did!

Stephane: K-5

Jonathan: Q-8

Patrick: J-5

The board was dealt 5 of Spades King of Clubs 6 of Diamonds Queen of Hearts Jack of Spades, and Stephane won a massive pot with his two pair.

Congratulations to Patrick (8th, $490) and Jonathan (7th, $650) on a great day of poker.

We say goodbye to 3 more

With 8 players remaining in the tournament, we are only two players away from the final table.

But to get there we had to lose some people. Now we say goodbye to three players who had a great tournament: Andre Bilodeau (11th, $270), Eric Benhamron (10th, $270) and Shawn S (9th, $370).

Ciao guys, see you next time!
