Samuel Miranda is the Grand Prix Canada Champion

2019/01/29 - 4:34 by

The heads up battle had been epic, and stacks were roughly even for a long stretch of time – but eventually, and slowly, Samuel began to expand – and maintain – his lead. When blinds reached 4M/8M in level 53, however, a 100M stack was no longer much to rely on.

Breyer Calvert – who had played an amazing tournament all day today – started to feel the blinds pressure and shoved 4 out of 6 hands in a row – seemingly willing to bring the matter to a conclusion.

Samuel, for his part, was patient and didn’t rise to the provocation… until the final hand of the night. Samuel was on the button and just limped, and Breyer went all in. Samuel made the call.

Breyer: Ace of Spades 7 of Diamonds
Samuel: Ace of Diamonds 2 of Hearts

Things looked bad for Samuel on the flop of 9 of Spades 8 of Spades King of Clubs, and the turn 5 of Diamonds didn’t alter the recipe at all… but then, suddenly – the river was the 2 of Spades! Sam let out an exuberant (but still respectful) cry – he had made a pair and was thus the Champion of the 2019 partypoker LIVE Grand Prix Canada in the World Cup of Cards.

Event #8 Champion: Samuel Miranda, $120,000

2nd place: Breyer Calvert, $75,000

The heads up match between Breyer Calvert and Samuel Miranda is turning into an epic battle. Samuel has made up the overlap between he and Breyer, and for the past level or so (level lengths have been halved for hu action) the two have been even, with not much movement in either direction.

There was a brief discussion of a deal, but both players seem to want to play it out “straight” with no prize pool modifications.

Heads up action in the Grand Prix Canada

2019/01/29 - 3:02 by

Although the disastrous hand that Samuel Miranda played against Breyer Calvert left him gasping for chips, following a scheduled break and the elimination of Aaron Marchand, Samuel was at just a little more than a 2:1 chip disadvantage. And now the heads up phase of the tourney has begun.

Marchand out in 3rd

2019/01/29 - 2:49 by

Aaron Marchand is apparently playing his first “big event” in this Grand Prix Canada, at least according to his supporters on the rail. The way this has gone for him might give him a distorted view of the realities of the tournament scene! For instance, you don’t win $50,000 every time you play…

In all seriousness, Aaron played a solid game throughout Day 2 and Day 3, and though he never appeared atop the leaderboard, he always seemed to have enough chips to work with – and that was good enough to get him to the final table.

After a short break, on the second hand to be played, Aaron open shoved from the sb and Samuel made the call.

Aaron: Jack of Spades 10 of Diamonds
Samuel: Ace of Diamonds 4 of Hearts

Sam let out a bit of a gasp when he saw the flop: Queen of Clubs 9 of Spades Ace of Clubs – this gave Aaron an open-ended draw – but Aaron left disappointed when the turn came 4 of Clubs and red river 7 of Clubs.

Samuel and Breyer are now playing heads up for the championship!

3rd place: Aaron Marchand, $50,000

THE hand of the Grand Prix Canada

2019/01/29 - 2:31 by

A pot that ended up including almost all of the chips in the tournament just transpired in the Tournament Hall on the final table of the Grand Prix Canada while 3-way action was underway. The hand involved all three of the players.

Breyer Calvert was on the button and opened with a raise to 5.5M, which found a call from Aaron Marchand. Next to act was Samual Miranda – holding the largest stack by about 30M or so – and he chose to 3b to 15.5M. Breyer then 4b to 34.5M. Aaron folded, and Sam flat called. Time for a flop.

Flop: 3 of Hearts 6 of Hearts Ace of Spades

Sam was first to act post-flop, and he checked it over to Breyer, who jammed all in with his 90,900,000 in chips. Sam made the call.

Breyer: Ace of Hearts 5 of Hearts
Samuel: Ace of Diamonds King of Diamonds

Both players had top pair, and while Samuel had the dominant kicker, Breyer had the flush draw…

Turn: 5 of Spades

Disaster for Samuel! Breyer made two pairs on the turn. The river improved his holdings, but not the result – Queen of Hearts to give him the flush.

Breyer stacked a pot of 261.4M in chips – over 75% of the total chips in play!

Guenette is eliminated from contention

We are now down to our final three players in this very well-attended World Cup of Cards Grand Prix Canada event. The player that finished fourth was Dale Guenette, who outlastied 3,370 of his fellow competitors.

Dale was the short stack at the table for the last 30 minutes or so, and managed to stick around despite that fact, so he should be proud of his efforts today.

In the hand that ended his night, Dale found himself all in preflop with Ace of Clubs Queen of Diamonds, an enviable pair of cards in any final four. Unfortunately for him, Breyer Calvert’s Jack of Diamonds King of Diamonds bested him in this particular hand. The board came down 8 of Hearts Jack of Diamonds Queen of Spades Jack of Hearts 5 of Diamonds, and Dale took his leave.

But Dale earned earned $36,062 for his efforts at the tables this week. Well done!

Turnbull finishes 5th

2019/01/29 - 2:03 by Playground Poker

After three intense days of action in the World Cup of Cards Grand Prix Canada event, Christopher Turnbull finished 4th. He was eliminated by chip leader Breyer Calvert just minutes ago.

The hand that led to his demise began with a raise from Breyer on the button to 4.5M. Turnbull shoved and was quickly called. Breyer flipped over his Ace of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds, and Christopher his King of Diamonds 8 of Diamonds.

The board was dealt 4 of Spades 3 of Diamonds 5 of Clubs 5 of Hearts Ace of Clubs and that was that. Christopher takes home a prize of $24,000, and puts another final table on his poker resume.

Congratulations to Christopher on an excellent tournament!

Luongo and Barre eliminated

2019/01/29 - 1:31 by

While the Omaha BBJ celebrations were going on at the other side of the Tournament Hall, both Samuel Barre and Fabio Luongo were eliminated from the final table in 7th place and 6th place respectively.

6th place: Fabio Luongo, $17,000

7th place: Samuel Barre, $11,000
