Spending time at the table 32, where Christopher Turnbull is playing, is pure entertainment. He is a charismatic character, with a Manchester accent, whose non-stop commentary keeps everyone at the table laughing, and simultaneously on edge.

I must have spent ten minutes just listening to him banter with the other players, commenting on their every move, before I began writing up a hand. At one point, the dealer turned to me. “Are you enjoying this as much as I am?”

Absolutely, I nodded my head. “This is television worthy!”

The fact that Christopher, the big stack at the table, encouraged me to peek at his hole cards added to my enjoyment, allowing me a feel for what he was up to.

When he drew a 9 of Clubs 10 of Clubs, he raised to 25,000, from an early position. The player immediately to his left, David Dusome called.

When the flop came down 5 of Clubs 7 of Spades 8 of Hearts, Christopher bet 20,000. David called.

The dealer revealed the turn, a Queen of Hearts. Both players tapped the felt.

But when the Jack of Hearts was revealed on the river, Christopher hit his straight, and spashed 60,000 chips into the pot. As David counted out his chips, he challenged Christopher. “I should raise you.”

“If you raise me you have the flush. You have it don’t you?”

Sure enough, David was holding King of Hearts 9 of Hearts.

“I should have raised you.” David shook his head.

Christopher smiled, “I would have folded.”

The players have just returned from their third 15 minute break. During the pause in the action, the chips were counted and it was determined that Jamie Sequeira is now our new chip leader. He boasts a stack of 1,000,000 chips and has opened up a lead of more than 100,000 chips over Adeel Aman Bangash whose stack measured in at 887,000 chips.

When I walked over to table 20, one of the players was sharing an amusing anecdote about a tournament he once played. By accident he had sat down, after a break, at the wrong table. He said that when he looked at his hand, he was holding ace, king. “I was just about to push, to go all in, when someone hurries up behind me and tells me I’m playing his stack.” The story-teller shook his head. “The funny thing is, his stack was way smaller than mine. He probably should have let me finish his hand.”

After hearing this tale I was sold on table 20, and decided to stick around and watch the action.  After a couple of hands of little consequence, Gael Dauphinais, from an early position, raised to 5,000. But after both Xavier Cena and Gregory McGinnis went all in, Gael mucked.

Before the dealer revealed the community cards, Gregory laid down Queen of Clubs Queen of Spades. Xavier’s hole cards were Ace of Diamonds Jack of Spades.

The flop came down Jack of Hearts 6 of Spades 8 of Diamonds. But when the turn card was revealed, Ace of Clubs, Gregory stood up. The river was a 3 of Spades, and Xavier raked in his spoils.

Late registration at the WCC Event #8 Day 1J is coming to a close in 15 minutes. 202 of the 454 entries are still alive and battling it out for a Day 2 spot.

During the break, following level 8, we counted the chips and discovered that it is still a tight race at the top of the leader board.

Eric Schanck is our front runner, with 525,000 chips. But nipping at his heels are Jamie Sequeira, with a stack of 515,000 chips, and Christopher Turnbull with 515,000.

There are still eight more levels to go. So, stay tuned to see if Eric can hang on to the lead, and to learn how many of the remaining 202 players will qualify for an opportunity to play in tomorrow’s Day 2 event.

The players are now midway through level eight at the WCC Event #8 Day 1J. There is still 90 minutes before the end of late registration, and we have already amassed 415 entries. Up to this point, 87 bullets have been re-fired, and the average player stack is now 150K

While I was walking around snapping photos, one competitor insisted I snap a photo of him. “My wife got me this hoodie. She says it makes me look like a young gun.” Another player, who was eager to be photographed, asked if he could sit in front of the big stack of some other player. “I don’t want to embarrass myself.”

Here are the pics.

The players at table 29 are all fairly self-contained. There is not a lot of verbal communication occurring between the competitors, as they seem to prefer to let their cards do the talking.

While I watched them play, a hand I followed featured Christopher Auger Bergeron, who limped in, preflop.  Daniel Leddy, Cole Crouse, He Chan, and Harris Kljucanin all called.

When the dealer revealed the flop, 10 of Diamonds 3 of Spades 6 of Diamonds, Christopher bet 2,600. Daniel called, and Cole, He, and Harris all mucked their cards.

When the turn was dealt, Queen of Clubs, Christopher bet 2,300. But instead of calling, now Daniel raised to 10,000. This gave Christopher pause for thought, and after pondering for a moment  or two, he called.

When the river came down 9 of Hearts, Christopher took his time before betting 7,400. Daniel didn’t hesitate. He called.

After Daniel revealed his Queen of Hearts 10 of Hearts, Christopher mucked his cards.

Firing out of the gate, three players have raced to the front of the pack at the WCC Event #8 Day 1J. After level 4, during the first players’ break of the evening, we counted chips and discovered that Tu Kham Tran is leading Carl Des Granges, and David Rasmussen by a nose. Tu’s stack measured 352,000 chips. But his lead over Carl Des Granges, who clocked in at 349,000, and David Rasmussen, who has amassed a stack of 343,000 chips, is minimal.

With 270 determined players nipping at their heels, do these three poker warriors have the stamina to hold of the field? Stay tuned to find out!
