Mason doubles… and then some

2019/01/28 - 1:06 by

Griffin Mason has been comfortably seated on table 26 for most of the day, a table that has been insanely over-chipped in the latter half of the evening, with two of the top three players seated there. He was holding his own all day, taking pots and keeping his stack hovering around the average – but in two back to back hands at the end of the night, both against Senthuran Vijayaratnam, he found his coveted double-up-plus.

Senthuran had been on a downturn for a couple of levels after losing what has to be termed a cooler when his middle Ace was out-kicked by an opponent’s higher kicker. And with the final few hands imminent, and action folded to him in the small blind, he chose to shove. Griffin was covered, but only just, and took a while to work out his choice… and finally called.

Senthuran: Queen of Clubs 5 of Clubs
Griffin: King of Clubs 8 of Hearts

The board cards by the end of the hand brought no joy for Senthuran: 3 of Diamonds 9 of Clubs 9 of Hearts 3 of Hearts 6 of Hearts. Neither player connected, so Griffin’s King-high was good – he then counted out his 4.480M to be matched by his neighbour.

Just one hand later, Senthuran was all in from the button, and it took no time at all for Griffin to call this time.

Senthuran: 10 of Clubs 7 of Clubs
Griffin: King of Spades King of Diamonds

The flop alone almost sealed the deal: 2 of Diamonds King of Clubs Ace of Spades and the turn and river locked it in tight: 9 of Spades 2 of Spades. Senthuran hit the rail while Griffin is certain, now, to make it Day 3 action.

Play has just begun in the final level to be played today. The remaining 44 players are spread around 6 tables of 8 players each at the moment, and with quite a few short stacks left in action, we expect several more eliminations before the qualifiers are able to bag up their chips to return on Day 3.

Fabio Luongo is often seen during big events here at Playground and recently seems to have bumped his game up a notch or two, appearing more often on leaderboards and final payout tables. He was among the leaders earlier today, and in the past level or so has accumulated enough chips to rejoin the leaderboard.

Just now he busted his neighbour to the right, Allan Yergeau. Allan opened the action with an open shove from utg+1 for just under 3.5M in chips, and Fabio made the call. There were some tough decisions for a couple of the other players yet to act – but in the end, everyone folded and the two players revealed their hands.

Allan: King of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds
Fabio: King of Spades King of Clubs

Fabio was in great shape but the flop brought a few new possibilities for Allan: 8 of Diamonds Ace of Spades 7 of Diamonds. The turn came 10 of Spades and neither was the river 7 of Spades the diamond Allan needed to make his flush, and Fabio’s Kings held. He’s now up to 14.6M in chips.

Samuel Barre has been among the chip leaders throughout the day, but going into the final 4 levels of play on Day 2, he has taken a big lead on the field, now playing over 16M in chips. Senthuran Vijayaratnam is keeping it close, weighing in at over 13M, while Sen’s table-mate Hrair Yapoudjian is the third player in the field with over 10M.

Hrair Yapoudjian has eliminated Rodney Ramalho to and in the process given himself a useful jolt of life to what had been an average stack. Senthuran Vijayaratnam opened the action from utg with a standard-ish raise, and Rodney followed up with a shove for his final 2M+ or so. Action folded to Hrair, who went all in over the top, and the blinds and Sen got out of the way.

Rodney: Ace of Spades King of Hearts
Hrair: Queen of Clubs Queen of Spades

The community cards all fell on the small end of the deck: 8 of Clubs 5 of Diamonds 3 of Hearts 7 of Spades 2 of Spades and Rodney was out.

In just 4 levels of play in the Grand Prix Canada there has been considerable movement on the leaderboard, as many players have dropped off an others have rocketed ahead. Senthuran Vijayaratnam continues to have the chip lead he accumulated during the last stint in play, and now Fabio Luongo (in the photo below) has moved up into second place.

The following table includes all of the players with more than 5M in chips to this point – but there are quite a few in the 4M range as well, any of whom could vault up the table at any time. With 8 more levels to play tonight, there will be plenty of opportunity to do so.

Another player well-known as a very solid chip accumulator has suddenly emerged on the scene – and even after losing over 1M in chips to Alexandre Bergeron-Cyr on his right, he’s still playing a stack of over 9M in chips!

The player is Senthuran Vijayaratnam, and he’s been visiting for major festivals for several years now, and is frequently found near the top of the leaderboard. Even Sen would admit, though, that as quickly as he can accumulate, historically he has been able to distribute just as fast. He seems particularly determined today, however, to not only hold on to his chips but to keep on building that stack.
